Cappi's Photos 2089Little Jimmy greeted people at the front gate and did clown skits with Goldie our tramp clown. They made up their own bits with just a little circus flavor. I hope to find a photo of Goldie. Bill Capell bought an old hook and ladder fire truck. It was parked in the front area of the front gate. Jimmy and Goldie used it for one of their gags. I got some old fire coats from the Tempe Fire Dept for their wardrobe. They would start the fire engine and set the siren off. When they got the attention of the crowd, the skit would start. It really was nothing more than the fire house gag, ending up with a bucket of torn bits of paper being thrown into the audience.

Cappi's Photos Circus116This is the lake front stage. It was the main stage at Legend City….where Wallace and Ladmoe performed every Sunday. We also presented small but professional rock and country western groups. The open air bleacher seated over 1000 people. The black drapery does not look so good in this photo as the wind was playing with it. Back stage were two dressing rooms that accommodated male and female artists. I wish I had a photo of the Legend City Saloon which was where the Mighty Midget and other single acts performed between our melodrama actors. We had a lot of good local amateur acts, pulse semi pros honing their talents. Every two weeks we would bring in a big professional act or promotion. Legend City only opened it’s doors in the evening and many nights would stay open till 2:am because of the heat in AZ. Of course in winter we would open much earlier.

SCAN1557Legend City Arm WestlingAll day long the events went on. The competition came from all over the Maricopa county area. The promoters of the event were in a friendly way ribbing me to join in and compete. After a while it did get under my skin, as it would any circus guy. I grew up driving stakes with a 16 pound sledge hammer and lifted as well carried more pig iron than they could possible imagine. As you can see, I took first in my division at 180 to 200 pounds………….That will teach them to mess with a Kinker.
