It didn’t take much in the old days…just a good clean ad to let the people know that there was a circus in town.

I travled with the Hagan Bros Circus in 1959 and 1960. I was the kid that “ran away with the circus”. The boss was a man that had both arms cut off below the elbow. We all called him pops. I was on the road about a year and a half. It was a most joyus event in my life. after a year and a half I decided that that was not what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. I returned home and finished school and then went into the U.S. Navy. Life with the circus was like being in the big top all of the time. Most of the performers did there act all day long. I got to watch and get to know all of the performers personally. It was just a big happy family.I would not trade that experience for anything on earth.

My experience with Hagen Bros Circus was the day they arrived in my hometown, Sulphur, LA. I’ll never forget that day. I arrived early to watch then set up the big top. I was about 12 years old. After the big top was up they had all these seats to set up. The straw boss ask anyone wanting to help would get a free ticket to the show. I raised my hand and I was one of about 12 people picked. That was a wonderful day. I’m 77 now but I can remember every detail and instruction like it was yesterday. Something I always wanted to do. I miss the circus today because there are so many stories that are still untold. It was a time in my life where we had no TV. It was the greatest entertainment. God bless all the circus of the past.
