Dorothy Herbert

It is somewhat hard to see, but where the saddle horn is not where it should be.  Dorothy’s horse has a side saddle rig. This type of saddle was used by women in the old days. It was un-lady like for a woman to straddle a horse and ride like a man. It wasn’t till the early 1940’s that most women started to ride in a western saddle. I am sure that there were a few exceptions and I think the motion picture industry had a lot to do with this change.  My personally still like to see a woman ride side saddle…..I simply think it is elegant.

Wonderful Lady! I got to know her when her and AW lived at the Big barn at Jungleland. Before my daughter was born, everytime she went to the grocey store she would buy a box of diapers All different sizes. When Jaime was born I had enough diapers to last until she was a year old. She was an angel. I will never forget her.

I used to prowl the old Hagenbeck-Wallace equipment that remained up at Goebel’s Big Barn. Howard Y. Bary had taken the title out in 1938, the annus horribilus for circuses, and with many other titles, he went broke. Louis Goebel took most of the wagons to his Lion Farm. Some were donated to museums, but a few were there in my time.

One night, I was walking among them when a pleasant lady joined me and told me about this show. We talked on, and became acquainted over my next several visits. She introduced herself as Mrs. kinnard. Later, I told Dick McGraw about the pleasure of meeting her, and he asked if I knew who she was. I said, “Yes, Mrs. A.W, Kinnard.” Dick said, “Yes,, but you know her more famous name. You’ve been visiting with Dorothy Herbert.”

Dorthy Herbert was my great Aunt. She was my grandmother’s half sister. They had the same mom, Mabel Lancaster. A great lady. I only got to see her perform once. I have lots of her photos and her Dr. Satan movie. I also read her book. She was a great lady and circus star. I am trying to find all the info I can on her. I think her father was, Edward Lancaster but I’m not 100% sure. If anyone knows please let me know. Any info will be appreciated. Thanks, Linda
