The White Face Clown
Posted By thecircusblog on September 29, 2008
I wish I could remember his name, too young at the time, and now too old. I enlarged this photo to honor the clown and Mr. Quillen. All my Grandfather’s Tin Types pictures were reproduced by Mr. Quillen. This photo had to be taken in the late 1930s or early 1940s.

Does anyone know the origin of this photo? Who was the man in the photo? When was it taken? Thanks.
I contacted the International Clown Hall of Fame and Research Center and they believe this is an early image of Ringling clown John Reilly.
He can be seen in color with an updated makeup design in a 1949 issue of LIFE Magazine (center square): https://64-media-tumblr-com.cdn.ampproject.org/ii/w680/s/64.media.tumblr.com/13e6cc47b570eb9375a49f16c448194c/tumblr_ox2a6zuAuU1rzp8q3o1_640.jpg
