Jungleland Flyer

The Jungleland flyer was very impressive, but this tiger was not in any movies.  Rajah was one of Mabel’s toughest tigers. It was true there was no SMOG in Thousand Oaks…..Back then, now I don’t know.

This tiger is Goldie, Mabel Stark’s lead cat. Mabel is positioning her for the rollover. In April of 1968, under circumstances no one has accurately retold, Goldie escaped from her exercise pen, and was subsequently shot and killed with a 30.06–even though the park was packed that Sunday. I have held Goldie’s skull, which is kept as a souvenir by the shooter, who, for now at least, will remain nameless. Mabel had been let go the previous November. If she had been called back that day, as we who were closely associated with her know, she could have cued Goldie home–but she was not. The decision was made to shoot the tiger, in spite of the park being crowded. One week later, Mabel was found dead at her home, the victim of an overdose of barbiturates.
