Dear Ivan: I found something interesting from The Sacramento Bee Sacramento California Thursday September 30, 1971 Page 33, American Circus Inc. is putting the bite on Julius Von Uhl in a suit filed today in Sacramento Superior Court, saying he was lured away by the Germaine, Miller-Johnson Circus. They wanted $500,000 in punitive damages from him and their competitor. He was supposed to have appeared in Eugene Colorado and Monroe Washington with his lions, tigers, ponies, and llamas. I found this in The Billings Gazette Billings Montana Monday July 8, 1968 Page 1, talking about a 700 pound exceptionally large lion named Nero attempting to kill Von Uhl. But the Baron had a friend in the ring. When Nero decided he was tired of eating only hamburger all the lions left the cage except one. The one who stayed Calgary hero then and now star of Von Uhl’s act helped out. He was only 300 pounds says the Baron, but after it was over all three of us were a little bloody. That was in Des Moines Iowa a month earlier. Von Uhl said he nearly killed me. There’s one from The Courier Waterloo Iowa September 26, 1966 Page 13, Von Uhl gashed required eight stitches. A blow caught him in the back, ripped through flesh, slashing. I don’t know if I told you that Von Uhl had three leopards. His tigers Rajah and Sheba II killed two of them and he managed to save the third, named Mary, who he sold to a man in Florida. So he learned the hard way you can’t mix tigers and leopards.
Dear Ivan: Here is something interesting I think, Von Uhl To train Olympic Riding Team, The News Paterson New Jersey Saturday February 24, 1962 Page 13. It says Private Von Uhl entered military service last September. It says his father Baron Dr. Julius Von Uhl is still in a communist prison camp. But his obituary says that his father’s name was Gyula.
