George Matthews Great London Circus
Posted By thecircusblog on March 13, 2013
Sid Kellner had these monogramed cloth patches made for show jackets and for the prop man’s coveralls. I got this from John Polacsek. along with the coupon and the 1976 route. John stopped off at our home in late Feb. He had been in San Diego, Calif, for the CFA meeting. We spent a few hours cutting up circus jack pots. Then off he went on his way back home in Michigan.

I worked as a 15-year-old Snow-Cones “consessions mgr” with Ron Pryor in 1974; from Cedar Falls, IA to Lafayette, LA (where, after a 5-day stop [and a robbery] in New Orleans, I smashed my finger with a sledge driving iron stakes into an asphalt lot with old Jim the Coca-Cola man). I bunked with Ron, Big Gary, and Little Gary; among others, and worked with Herbie and Marcella (popcorn and cotton candy) who were also the Tightrope Act; and old “Red Necks White Socks…” Jim (who also may have sold white cross amphetamine tablets).
Ron saved us from a potentially Deadly Riot in Memphis by wooing the crowd with his “Ron the Pimp” rap and colorful, complete with platform shoes, outfit… He claimed to be related to someone named Richard [Pryor] whom (as a naive Iowa white boy) I hadn’t heard of at the time… Though I was there for only a short time it was filled with adventure and I wouldn’t trade it even for a straight left-forefinger. GMGLC was Great Fun.
