Hubert Castle #3

6340207312_08a3b84f92_zHubert surely knew how to promote himself. He told me that one of his hidden secrets was that he would have liked to be an actor. This came out in a conversation we had concerning my career in acting when I was not on the road. I still was performing with the chimp act which really was my ambition. Hubert indeed had the looks and the talent to become an actor, but I think that he knew that his calling was the circus………. He was successful no doubt about it.

  1. Roger Smith says:

Hubert Castle got one good shot at film acting, in SENSATIONS OF 1945. He played the wire-walker Olaf, The Great Gustafson, and was required to affect an East European accent. Those who knew of Hubert’s deep-seated prejudices marvel that he agreed to portray a non-American. The picture starred Dennis O’Keefe and Eleanor Powell, bickering over getting publicity for a wire-walker. This is a variety act ensemble, with many top musical names of the day. Circus acts included The Pallenberg Bears, The Cristianis, The Flying Copelands, Mel Hall, Starless Night, and The Huberts. I’ve seen it on YouTube, and it’s a pleasure to see these great circus stars of another day. The film is further noteworthy as featuring the last screen appearance of W.C. Fields.
