Mel trained this lion for motion picture work. To his surprise and much to his financial good,  this lion became one of three lions that were the M.G.M. logo at the beginning of their movies.

This is a great picture. I knew him well when I was a child growing up in Thousand Oaks, he was a good friend of my mothers and I looked upon Mel Koontz as a father figure. Thank you very much!
If you have any others can you post them?

Mel was my Grandmother Lockwood’s cousin. When I was a child I remember”grandma” telling me many, many stories about Mel. We were all SO PROUD of him. Grandma lived, died and is buried in Ft.Scott, Kansas. Mel is buried there too. I hope there will be more postings and pictures from Tara and others that knew Mel. Doug: alaskadoug@gmail.com
