Campbell_Bros_Circus__1908_Parade_panels_2a_-_Gildemeister_coll(3) This is the way I received this photo of Campbell Bros. I put it in to my photo shop and was able to separate for a better look.

Lynne, this was your family circus until drought force it to close. That’s when the family moved to California.

I have evidence of two black jaguars that were killed in 1900 and 1901 in the wilds of Arizona, and three additional seemingly human-habituated jaguars in New Mexico. Black jaguars do not occur naturally north of extreme southern Mexico, so they had to have been imported for some yet unknown reason. These were suspected at the time of having escaped from a circus. Apparently at least one circus must have been traveling with jaguars for that to be suspected. The circuses in the area at that time included Campbell Bros., Sells and Gray’s, an unnamed Mexican circus known to draw large crowds, and Walter L. Main. Ringling Bros. came through for the first time a few months following the first black jaguar. Main Circus was sold at auction in January 1900 after disbanding in Las Vegas, NM in November 1899.

Do you know if any of these circuses had jaguars at that time?
