Pawnee Bill’s Wild West Show

Posted By on February 25, 2010

In 1888 Pawnee Bill went out on tour with his wild west show. He  lasted one season…. that year only.  The competition in the late 1800’s was unreal and just about every circus had a wild west after show. The year before in 1887 Pawnee Bill was with the Sells Bros Circus and I guess Bill thought he could do it on his own. In the 1890’s Pawnee Bill did do some personal appearances with a smaller version of his original show but slowly faded away. That’s about all I know about Pawnee Bill, if others have information send it along to me for thecircusblog.com    Thanks.

I think it was one of our birthdays. It really didn’t take much for us to get together.  Any excuse would do. There was always “jack pots” to go over. Photo taken 2005. Bill Capell, Ivan Henry and Jimmy Carter.

1947 Our Home Away from Home

After world war tw0 these military semi’s were sold to the public. My Dad bought one and converted it into a 5th wheel mobile home. Dad was a fine builder.  Dad,  Bill Dietrich and Bud Baily had it ready to go on the road within a month.  The semi was all metal and very strong and the inside was lined with sheet metal with rows of seats much like that of a bus.  This is what the military used to haul military personnel to and from the base etc.  These semi- buses were lined up 10 or 20 at a time after they were filled with personnel. A truck would back under, hook up and take them to there destination…and then unhook and go back for another load. They used about 5 tractors per 10 semis. This system was to save fuel……  or so the military said.

1948 The Henry’s Mobile Home 5th Wheel

Who would have ever thought that after Dad and few others got the idea to convert a military semi-bus into a 5th wheel mobile home with all the conveniences of home that one would need on the road. On the back of the truck Dad built a box to haul rigging and props…….Circus people invent out of need of necessity. Now you see these 5th Wheels passing us on the freeways and the funny part is most are not show people…I wonder where they got the idea.
